Jack Van Scoter

Jack has trained with me on and off since he was 13 years old. He first came to me as a 13-year-old attending Flintridge Preparatory School in La Canada. Already an excellent runner, we began to work on his mobility, flexibility and other fundamentals. We he resisted “the boring stuff” such as foam rolling and stretching, I told him that was exactly what his competitor would want to hear. The rest is history!

“I first began working with Martin in 2010 when I was 13 years old, still wide-eyed about what it meant to be a committed athlete, let alone a good person. Martin was instrumental in shaping both aspects by starting me on the fundamentals of sport: foam rolling, stretching, and plyometrics. Despite my cavalier teenage attitude, Martin took the time to explain to me why these activities were so important to my development, in addition to showing me how they were properly done. No matter how much I complained, Martin never did, believing in my long term potential and giving me the tools to actualize it. In this way he taught me the value of interpersonal communication and the power of emotional intelligence when applied to whatever I set your mind to.

In retrospect, I see Martin’s exceptional patience and unconditional support for me in my youth as the foundation of what came after: Turkish get-ups, kettlebell swings, long runs. I could not have become an NCAA Division 1 runner and endured that crucible of competition and grinding, the constant cycle of setbacks and euphoric successes, without his ongoing help. Martin is the rare kind of trainer that understands how sport can be an inroad to success in life, on and off the field. Sport teaches a humble commitment to excellence, the importance of the daily decision to give the world your best. I recommend Martin to anyone that thinks they have this commitment in them. Once he sees that in you, Martin will support you to the last, believing in your dreams even when you don’t. This is the intangible value he brings to training and what truly sets him apart.”
